WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 Multiplayer: Hotseat for Four Players and Remote Play

WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 has no online multiplayer servers: up to four managers share hotseat mode on one PC, and Steam Remote Play is the way to play online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 have online multiplayer?
Not in the server sense. The Steam store page's category list names Multi-player, PvP, Shared/Split Screen PvP and Remote Play Together — and pointedly nothing like Online PvP, Online Co-op or Cross-Play Multiplayer. The official manual puts it in one sentence: the game 'supports Steam Remote Play, so you can also play against each other online. The same rules apply here as when playing on a computer' (EN p. 111).
How many players does the hotseat mode support?
Up to four. The manual's intro states the game 'can be played alone or with up to four players in hotseat mode (from WAF2024 onwards; previously, only two players in total were possible)' (EN p. 11), and the multiplayer chapter repeats the history: WAF and the old National Team edition allowed a maximum of 2, the hotseat was expanded to 4 for WAF2024 (EN p. 111).
What happens when the hotseat time limit runs out?
A countdown sounds for the last five seconds, then a random minor penalty is imposed. That can happen three times in a row; after that, no further penalties are imposed during the current planning phase — the manual's reasoning being that the player presumably has 'a valid reason and is probably just away from their computer'. The time limit is on by default and can be switched off in the options (EN p. 111, EN p. 126).
Is there split screen, co-op or crossplay in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027?
Steam labels the local mode 'Shared/Split Screen PvP', but the documented form is turn-based hotseat on one screen — simultaneous split-screen play is not described anywhere in the official material. There is no Online Co-op category and no other platforms: the store lists Windows only (no Mac, no Linux, no consoles), so a crossplay question does not arise. The game also runs on the Steam Deck (EN p. 11).

The first thing a group of managers asks is not how to play — it is whether they can play together. The short answer for WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027: yes, but around one screen rather than across servers. The store description puts it in seven words, “Hotseat multiplayer for up to 4 players”, and nothing in the game’s official listing describes an online mode of its own. This page sorts out what that means: how hotseat actually plays, what its time limit does, how Steam Remote Play extends it over the internet, and which things — matchmaking, co-op, crossplay — the game simply does not offer.

Does WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 have online multiplayer?

The store page’s own category list is the cleanest evidence, because Steam maintains those labels itself. For WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 it reads: Single-player, Multi-player, PvP, Shared/Split Screen PvP, Shared/Split Screen, Steam Achievements, Camera Comfort, Color Alternatives, Custom Volume Controls, Adjustable Difficulty, Playable without Timed Input, Steam Cloud, Includes level editor, Remote Play Together and Family Sharing. Since Update 1 went live on 24 September, a sixteenth category has joined the list — Steam Workshop — and it changes nothing about the multiplayer picture.

Read that list for what is missing: there is no Online PvP, no Online Co-op, no Cross-Play Multiplayer — the labels Steam attaches to games with their own internet servers and matchmaking. The German-speaking community tags the game the same way on the store page: Einzelspieler, Mehrspieler, “Lokaler 4-Spielermodus” — a local four-player mode. So the honest one-line answer is: no dedicated online multiplayer; the internet part of the equation is Steam Remote Play, covered below.

How the hotseat mode works

Hotseat is the multiplayer the game was built around. Everyone plays in the same save and the same game world, one after the other: each manager takes their turn, and when the turn is done the next one sits down. The manual’s intro frames the group size — “alone or with up to four players in hotseat mode (from WAF2024 onwards; previously, only two players in total were possible)” (EN p. 11 / DE S. 11) — and the multiplayer chapter adds the lineage: WAF and the old National Team edition capped the table at two, the expansion to four came with WAF2024 (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110).

Three design decisions from the manual’s multiplayer chapter shape how a session feels:

  • The turn is protected. Play runs in planning phases, and the game politely forces pace — more on that below — so one absent manager cannot freeze three others.
  • The order is yours. “The order of play can be set flexibly” (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110); the options chapter lists the player order as one of the hotseat settings (EN p. 126 / DE S. 138).
  • Information asymmetry is optional. “Scouting results can also be shared amongst players if desired, so that the most accurate information available is always displayed” (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110). Leave it off and every manager scouts their own network; switch it on and the table plays with open cards.

If you are choosing a starting point for a hotseat league, the game modes overview explains which career variants exist, and the difficulty settings guide shows how uneven the skill gap at your table can be compensated.

The time limit and its penalties

The hotseat’s watchdog is a time limit for the planning phase, on by default. The manual explains both the mechanism and its mercy: “If the time limit is exceeded, minor penalties are applied. This can happen up to three times per game round; after that, we assume that the player in question has a valid reason and is probably just away from their computer” (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110). The options chapter adds the detail you will actually experience: a countdown sounds for the last five seconds, the penalty is random, and after three penalties no further ones are imposed during the current planning phase (EN p. 126 / DE S. 138).

Two takeaways for a calm evening: nobody is ever thrown out of the save — the worst case is a small random penalty three times, then grace — and if your group dislikes the pressure altogether, “of course, you can also disable the time limit in the options” (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110). Groups that play on a laptop will find the rest of the setup screens familiar ground from the beginner guide.

Playing online with Steam Remote Play Together

This is the part that answers “but can we play over the internet?” — yes, through Steam’s own streaming feature rather than game servers. The manual dedicates a full sentence to it: “WE ARE FOOTBALL supports Steam Remote Play, so you can also play against each other online. The same rules apply here as when playing on a computer” (EN p. 111 / DE S. 110). The store page mirrors that with the Remote Play Together category.

In practice, one player owns and runs the game; the others join through Steam Remote Play and watch and act in turns exactly as they would on the couch. There is no matchmaking, no lobby browser and no separate server — the hotseat rules, time limit included, carry over unchanged, because it is still the same save taking turns. It is also the only “online” the game knows: if you have heard of an online league mode for WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027, it is this feature under a different name.

What WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 multiplayer is not

Three things the store list does not promise, worth spelling out before a group buys four copies — even though, as it turns out, Remote Play means one copy can be enough:

  • No simultaneous split screen. Steam labels the local mode “Shared/Split Screen PvP”, but the manual only ever describes turn-taking on one screen; nowhere does the official material describe two managers playing at the same time on a divided screen.
  • No online co-op. There is no Online Co-op category, and the competitive labels (PvP) are the only multiplayer ones Steam lists. Whether two managers can jointly run a single club in hotseat is not addressed by the official sources at all.
  • No crossplay — because there is nowhere to cross to. The store lists Windows only: no Mac, no Linux, no consoles. The one alternative device is the Steam Deck, which the manual explicitly includes (EN p. 11 / DE S. 11); the system requirements guide collects the full platform picture including the Deck’s recommended control mapping.

What the official sources do not say

Some honesty, because multiplayer questions live in the gaps: the manual does not state whether hotseat managers can pick clubs from the same league (derby leagues) or must spread out; it does not document a co-op variant of any kind; and it makes no statement about Remote Play streaming quality on slow connections — that part is Steam’s technology, not the game’s. The spectator side of a shared save, where you follow a club without managing it, is a separate single-player feature covered in the spectator mode guide.

If the answers above fit your group — a shared save, four managers, one screen or Remote Play — the multiplayer in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 is exactly what the store page says in seven words, nothing more and nothing less.
