Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to buy a separate DLC for national teams in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027?
No. The store page lists national team content under the base game's features — separate European Championship and World Cup modes for men and women, plus the option to manage a national team from the start or during a career. The paid DLC route belongs to the 2020 predecessor: WE ARE FOOTBALL - National Teams, whose store description says it 'adds all international games to the main game'. In 2027 nothing extra is needed.
Is there women's football in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027?
Yes. The first decision of every new save is men's or women's football, chosen by clicking a player or a female player (EN p. 15). The store page separately lists European Championship and World Cup modes for women and two European women's club competitions. The manual sums up the differences under 'Women': identical simulation, pregnancies and twins, and far less money in the game (EN p. 174-175).
Can you manage a club and a national team at the same time?
Offers during a career are an official feature: the store page names the option to 'accept offers for national teams during your career'. How the double role is handled in detail — workload, contract, pay — the official manual does not explain. Our manager personal-life guide, based on video evidence, shows the national-team post treated as a side job on top of club work, with a Verband (association) meter that only matters when you hold it.
How many matches does a national team season have in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027?
Few, and they are concentrated: the manual reserves three weeks per season for national team matches — 1 friendly and 5 qualifiers across those weeks (EN p. 45). Continental and World Championships are then played at the end of the season in June, in even-numbered years for men and odd-numbered years for women. Once a tournament is over, pure tournament saves end with it (EN p. 19).

For players of the 2020 WE ARE FOOTBALL, the first question about national teams is a money question: the old game locked internationals behind a paid add-on. For WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027 the answer changes — international football, men’s and women’s, ships in the base game. What has not changed is how little documentation the national team layer gets, so this page assembles what the official sources actually say: how you take charge of a national team, what its season looks like, how squads are built, and what women’s football adds. If you are still choosing between the six career starts, the game modes overview covers the full set; this page stays with the national-team side of them.

Is there a national team in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027?

Yes, and it is not an add-on. The store page’s feature list carries a section simply titled National teams with two bullet points: “Separate European Championship and World Cup modes for men and women” and the “Option to manage a national team right from the start or accept offers for national teams during your career”. Spectator mode is described in the same list as the mode “in which you can follow the results of a club and/or national team” — national teams are woven through the product rather than sold next to it.

The contrast with the series’ history is real. The 2020 predecessor sold its internationals as a paid DLC, WE ARE FOOTBALL - National Teams, whose own store description explains: “The National Teams DLC adds all international games to the main game.” In 2027 no equivalent purchase exists — the manual’s foreword treats national team play as one of the game’s built-in variants, and the Update 1 announcement of 24 September 2026 fixes a crash “budget section national teams”, proof that the module ships, budget screen and all, in the release version.

How do you become a national team coach?

The manual names three routes, all hinging on the same sentence: “Next, you select the game variant and then choose your club or national team” (EN p. 19 ↔ DE S. 20).

  • The tournament cards. The start screen’s Weltmeisterschaft and Europameisterschaft options are what the manual calls “pure tournament modes for national teams” — and their catch is spelled out in the same breath: “Pure tournament modes cannot be combined with the other game modes. Once the tournament is over, the game ends” (EN p. 19 ↔ DE S. 20). You pick a nation, play one summer, and the save closes with the final whistle. You can coach the games live from the sidelines; how those evenings work is walked through in the career mode guide.
  • Directly into the dugout. “Finally, depending on the game mode, you can also select a national team. Then the actual season begins” (EN p. 20 ↔ DE S. 22) — outside the pure career, a national team can be your starting employer.
  • The earned offer. In a real career the federation does not call on day one: “If you’re playing a real career, you’ll first have to work your way up to an offer. You’re not yet well known enough in the wider football world, and many WAF players therefore found this option unrealistic” (EN p. 20 ↔ DE S. 22). The manual is unusually candid here — build your reputation at a club first, and the store page’s promised offers “during your career” follow from it.

A fourth seat exists for the patient: spectator mode starts you without club or national team, following either instead — the spectator mode guide walks that screen by screen, national team included.

What does a national team season look like?

Shorter than you might expect. The manual’s season-rhythm section reserves little calendar space for international football (EN p. 45 ↔ DE S. 48–49):

FixtureWhat the manual documents
Match weeks“three weeks are normally reserved for matches during the season”
Matches per season“1 friendly match and 5 qualifying matches per season”
Tournamentscontinental and world championships “at the end of the season in June”
Tournament yearseven-numbered years for men, odd-numbered years for women

That last row is the women’s calendar in one sentence: “In even-numbered years, continental and world championships are held at the end of the season in June for men, and in odd-numbered years for women” (EN p. 45 ↔ DE S. 49). A national team save therefore lives a quiet club-season rhythm — weeks of watching your players elsewhere, then a burst of internationals — and, if you picked a pure tournament, ends the moment the cup is lifted or the group stage sends you home. National teams even get the club’s memory culture: “The national teams also have their own museums” (EN p. 112 ↔ DE S. 111). Two footnotes from the same changelog chapter: since WAF27 a country can be given a dedicated national-team stadium, with further stadiums approvable for internationals — where the feature goes unused, venues are still picked by size (EN p. 184 ↔ DE S. 196). And anyone hoping for national-team competitions outside Europe must wait: “At least in WAF27, there are no changes here compared to WAF2024. This is currently planned for WAF28” (EN p. 184 ↔ DE S. 196).

How do you build a national team squad?

The manual’s glossary entry for the national team is short but concrete (EN p. 122 ↔ DE S. 134–135). Its four instructions:

  • The talent pool decides. “When selecting a national team, the talent pool is particularly important for long-term success.” Your country’s generated talent determines your ceiling more than anything you can buy.
  • Recruit beyond the pool. “Make use of the options to convince players from your country to join, persuade them or grant them citizenship” — eligibility is something you work on, not a given.
  • Check the youth before every tournament. “At least once before a tournament, check for suitable youth players who you might be able to take with you. It’s best to do this a few weeks before the squad is announced.”
  • Open your own wallet. “You can also support your national team through donations.” The donations entry spells it out: via ‘Personal’ you can fund your club or the national team with your own money, “thereby enabling, for example, a transfer or the appointment of staff” (EN p. 97 ↔ DE S. 156).

That second instruction is a live community topic, too: a Steam discussion titled “Pros and cons of choosing more than one nation at start?” (3 replies as of 25 September 2026) shows managers weighing exactly that choice.

How the money side is organised — the federation budget behind those donations — the manual never documents. That a national team budget screen exists at all is proven the hard way: Update 1 (24 September 2026) lists “Fix: Crash budget section national teams” among its fixes. The fix itself, and the rest of the patch, is broken down in our Update 1 troubleshooting guide.

Women’s football in WE ARE FOOTBALL 2027

Women’s football is not a submenu — it is one of the first clicks of every new save: “you can click on one of the players to choose between men’s and women’s football” (EN p. 15 ↔ DE S. 15). The foreword sets the framing: “Football in the men’s and women’s leagues is simulated on an equal footing in the game; the only difference is the number of leagues and competitions” (EN p. 10 ↔ DE S. 10). The store page names the competition layer: separate European Championship and World Cup modes for women, and “Two European competitions for women’s football” at club level.

The manual’s glossary entry ‘Women’ (EN p. 174–175 ↔ DE S. 106) is the most detailed women’s-football documentation in any official source, and its headline is honesty about money:

  • “The game works identically for men’s and women’s football” — same engine, same simulation — “For women, potential pregnancies are also factored in. Twins are also a possibility.”
  • Women’s-football-only developments exist: “annual magazines, collectable albums and the future equalisation of tournament prize money”, plus advertising contracts “typical of women”.
  • “A major difference lies in the financial model. From the outset, there is far less money involved” — sponsorship, salaries, everything — “Investments in infrastructure are particularly demanding, as the costs are no different from those for men’s teams.”
  • The growth is modelled: “a long-term upward trend that gradually brings the figures a little closer to those of the men’s game. Nevertheless, anyone looking for a challenge will find one here.”
  • Two deliberate unrealisms: injury rates (cruciate ligament tears) are not raised to real-world levels, and careers do not end earlier because of lower salaries — both “for gameplay reasons”.

The difficulty chapter agrees on the challenge: “women’s football presents a particular challenge, as you have to manage your finances very carefully” (EN p. 18 ↔ DE S. 19). And the two worlds stay apart by design: “Men’s and women’s football are separate and do not influence each other” (EN p. 212 ↔ DE S. 224). For the women’s national team specifically, that means the same season rhythm as the men’s — three match weeks, June tournaments in odd-numbered years — with a smaller competition landscape around it.

What the official sources do not say

Some honesty, because this is where most national team questions live. The manual never documents the national team budget — what fills it besides your donations, or what it buys — though Update 1’s fix list proves the screen exists. It says nothing about the shape of the national team job: contract length, salary, or the rule for holding it alongside a club post; our manager personal-life guide documents, from video evidence, the national-team post behaving like a side job with its own Verband meter, but the manual itself is silent. It also does not detail the call-up screen beyond “the squad is announced”, nor how women’s databases are structured — the store page words its Standard and World databases as databases “for men’s football”, and a Steam discussion titled “No Women own database ?” (4 replies as of 25 September 2026) shows the community asking the same thing. Where the manual is silent, we say so; every claim above points to its page.

If you are starting with a national team rather than a club, the beginner guide covers the screens every save shares — and the tournament route makes a fine first evening in the dugout.
